Visiting the Grand Siddhivinayak Temple

Siddhivinayak temple Mumbai is a majestic temple and also quite a famous one. It is the city’s richest temple and is known for fulfilling the wishes of devotees. Lord Siddhi Vinayak rests in a small mandap and the wooden doors of the sanctum have the images of Ashtavinayak. Inside you can see the roof being plated with gold. There is also a Hanuman temple here.

Such is the popularity of the temple that it s visited also by celebrities. It was built by Devbhai Patil and Laxman Vithu in 1801. The temple is also called as Navasala Pavanara Ganapati or Navasacha ganapati and on Tuesdays are special here with many ceremonies being held.  

Inside the temple, you can see the idol of Lord ganesh, with his consorts Riddi and Siddi. You can also see an idol of his vahana.  The most striking aspect about the idol is that it has a trunk on the right side.

At the Mahalakshmi Temple

This majestic temple has a lovely and unusual exterior structure and was built in 1831.  Building of the temple was done by Dhakji Dadaji, who is a Hindu merchant. It is a famous landmark in the city and one that overlooks the ocean.

Inside you can see the beautiful statue of Goddess mahalakshmi and it is a swayambhu idol, which is decorated with nose ring, bangles and a golden mask. You can also find images of Goddess Saraswati, Vithal Rukmani and Ganesha.  

At The Walkeshwar Temple

Another famous shrine to visit here is the Walkeshwar temple, which is  one of the oldest temples in the city. The shiva lingam idol here was made by Lord Rama and he performed puja on it.  Lord Rama stopped in this spot on his way to Lanka in pursuit of Ravana and wanted to worship Lord Shiva.

Asking lakshmana to bring a lingam for this purpose, and having waited for a while without his return, he created on himself from sand. The temple structure was built by the Silharas about thousand years ago and it displays an ancient architectural style. It is very busy on full moon days. The annual Hindustan classical music festival occurs here every year.
